When Is Root Canal Therapy Needed? Marion, AR

Doctor

Root canal therapy is safe, comfortable, and best of all, effective. Yes, with the help of this reliable procedure, you can keep your tooth and eliminate any pain and infection that has manifested inside of it. At our office in Marion, AR, Dr. Wayne Cook performs root canal therapy to give patients complete, and completely strong, smiles.

What is root canal therapy?

Also known as endodontics, root canal therapy restores an abscessed, deeply decayed, or injured tooth back to health. In other words, it's a great alternative to dental extraction and the smile problems that it causes.

Why would you need a root canal?

Root canal therapy relieves pain, sensitivity, and infection, while also strengthening tooth structure above the gum line. You may be in need of this treatment if you display any of the following symptoms:

  • A large crack or chip
  • A missing or deteriorating filling
  • Pain
  • Drainage
  • Bad breath
  • Dark tooth enamel
  • Pimples or sores on the gums
  • Extreme dental sensitivity when chewing or drinking/eating something hot or cold

What happens during root canal therapy?

In the first of two visits to his Marion office, Dr. Cook will examine and X-ray your tooth to see if root canal therapy is the right restorative treatment for you. If it is, he'll numb the tooth with local anesthetic and access the root canal chambers.

From each canal, he will extract the damaged/infected pulp, add some antibiotic medication, and seal the chamber with rubbery gutta-percha. A temporary cap protects the tooth as it heals. In a week or so, you'll return to the office to receive a customized porcelain crown.

What happens after root canal therapy?

Expect your symptoms to resolve and your tooth to look and act perfectly natural. Brush and floss as you usually do, and see Dr. Cook every six months for an examination and cleaning. Your restored tooth should last for many years, according to the American Dental Association (ADA).
